Match Reports

Under 9 Cubs v Royce Rangers (09 Mar 08)

This was the cubs last league game of the season. There wasn't much riding on it for the Cubs but the result for was very important for Royce Rangers (RR). A draw or win would see them win the division.

FF started off like they meant business and went 1-0 up within the first minute. They continued to dominate throughout the first half and put together some very impressive attacks.

Josh was having his game of the season at right back and made at least 2 goal-line clearances plus plenty of other last ditched tackles to prevent certain goals.

John in goal was also having a great game and between them they kept the score to a very respectable 2-0 by half time. John's highlight was an amazing double save, first a great block immediately followed by a dive low his left to push it round for a corner.

The half time team talk was about passing the ball up front rather than kicking long balls and to their credit the boys did exactly that and were much more of a threat in the second half.

One highlight was a brilliant one-two between Daniel and Aston which split the FF defence wide open and left Daniel honing in on goal but some good last ditched defending by RR this time prevented him from scoring.

Mervin and Alex played well down the flanks and Thomas having a steady game at left back. Long distance shots from Daniel and Josh both went close but they could find the back of the net. RR scored another two making the final score 4-0.

As the Cubs had no substitutes and the boys had to play a full 40 minutes each, they understandably started to tire towards the end of the match but they hung on in there and were more than a match for RR in the second half.

It was tough to choose between Josh and John for Man of the match but in the end John pipped it due to his outstanding saves.

Daniel finished the season as the team's top scorer, closely followed by Aston.

Under 9 Cubs v Asfordby (09 Mar 08)

This was BU's first win since November and the boys thoroughly deserved it.

They went 1-0 up after Aston King's cross-cum-shot went straight through the defence and ended up in the back of the net.  Everyone thought Daniel Hughes had scored it but he was honest enough to admit he didn't get a touch.

BU got to the break at 1-0, and the manager's half time message was to make more controlled pass up to the front boys.

The boys took this message on board and the second half attacks were much more controlled.

Infact BU went 2-0 straight from the second half kick off.  Daniel played it wide to Harry Antill who dribbled down the wing. Harry looked up and saw Daniel bombing into the box and picked out the perfect pass.  Daniel hit a first time shot which screamed into the top right corner of the goal.  What a fantastic move.

Asfordby came back well and got the score back to 2-1, but BU held on and fully deserved the win.  Well done boys.

Man of the match was Connor Jordan

Netheral Diamonds v Under 9 Cubs (24 Feb 08)

BU found themselves up against a much improved Netheral side who played some lovely football.

BU took the lead after a brilliant first-time pass from Harry Antill found Aston on the right wing. Aston beat one player and then powered down the wing whilst Harry and Alex charged into the penalty area. Aston nut-megged the left back on the edge of the area and used Harry and Alex as decoys as he went for goal himself. The goalkeeper managed to get a hand on it but couldn't prevent it from dribbling over the line.

Watch Aston's Goal - [2MB]

ND came back strongly and scored twice before the break.

BU found it hard to repeat their positive, attacking display of the first half and didn't really trouble the ND goalkeeper in the second half.

ND scored another goal and the game finished 3-1 to the home team.

Man of the match was birthday boy, Josh Ward.

Royce Eagles v Under 9 Cubs (27 Dec 07)

This was a very even match played in very windy conditions. BU played against the wind in the first half.

The first real action of the half was a brilliant double save by John Scarfe after 7 minutes.  He first parried a close range shot  and then dealt with the rebound too.  Even the RE fans applauded it.

He repeated his heroics three minutes later.  BU lost possession from a free kick in their own half and RE attacked and a powerful shot was flying into the top right corner but John managed to push it round the post for a corner.

As expected most of the first half action was in our half as we found it difficult to clear our lines against a very powerful wind.

Connor Jordan was playing a blinder at the back and was cutting out nearly every attack, by keeping his eye on the swirling ball.

We managed to get to half time at 0-0 thanks to a great defensive display by John, Connor and Thomas Zeh Fewkes.

We came out for the second half but despite the wind behind us we conceded an early goal. Aston King nearly got one back immediately but his shot went straight at the keeper.

Mervin nearly broke the cross bar with an almighty shot. He was so unlucky not to score. Soon after that Daniel nearly equalised but despite his shot beating the keeper it was cleared off the line by a last-gasp effort from a defender.

The boys were trying really hard to equalise but with 5 minutes to go RE extended their lead. They scored after being initially denied by an excellent tackle by Connor and another unbelievable save by John.

The boys kept plugging away but were unable to grab a consolation goal.

Final score Royce Eagles 2-0 Under 9 Cubs

Man of the match was John Scarfe for a string of outstanding first half saves.

Riverside Kestrals 1-0 Under 9 Cubs (16 Dec 07)

This was the best that BU have played all season. Unfortunately for them, they came up against a RK goalkeeper who was on top form.

I'm still not quite sure how we lost this one. We were in total control - dominating midfield and ripping through them up front. We had lots of efforts on goal but we just couldn't find that elusive final touch to beat the keeper who made a number of outstanding saves.

You can't fault the boys for effort and when they went 1-0 down, they bounced back immediately with their usual determination and, in quick succession, had several chances cleared off the line. They peppered the RK goal right up until the final whistle and nearly sneaked a draw at the death when a brilliant corner to the near post by Mervin was poked goalwards by Aston, but agonisingly deflected off a defender for another corner.

Earlier, Daniel Hughes came close with a lovely shot on the turn, which on any other day would have gone in the net.

If they keep playing like this it's only a matter of time before they start scoring some points.

Great game, played in a great spirit. If only all games were like that.

Man of the match was Bill Kaul.

Syston Foxes 3-2 Under 9 Cubs (2 Dec 07)

Today's away fixture against the league leaders was under threat from the weather as the Syston pitch was waterlogged. Luckily, the rain stopped ten minutes before kick off and the sun came out.  There was a small part of the pitch which was badly flooded, but ten minutes of brushing soon cleared enough water to make it playable.

The boys were really up for this game and, as seems the norm these days, there was a goal very early on.  Unfortunately this time it went to the opposition. SF scored on their very first attack.  However, BU responded in the best way possible and scored straight from the resulting kick-off.  A quick burst down the right saw Mervin produce an excellent cross which Alex Nelson tucked into the net from close range for his first goal of the season.

In conditions which proved impossible for dribbling it was definitely not a day for pretty football, however both teams did a great job in providing a very entertaining first half.

Aston King nearly put BU into the lead with a cracking long range shot which the SF keeper did well to hold on to.

SF took the lead mid way though the first half.  A quick break saw them outnumber the BU defence 3 to 2 and the scorer went round John Scarfe in goal and slotted it into the net.  But once again BU responded immediately from the kick off with a trademark maisy run by Daniel Hughes.  He went pass three defenders but just as he was about to pull the trigger, the ball got bogged down in the mud and SF managed to clear it.

SF had a cracking young player who was putting in some amazing crosses and corners, but Josh Ward and Connor Jordan were dealing with them equally impressively and clearing the danger.

BU made a swtich at half time and brought Harry Antill on for Alex Nelson.

BU came storming out in the second half determined to get back on level terms.  Realising that the long ball game was they to go in these conditions, John Sacrfe produced a huge drop kick which sailed well over the half way line.  Daniel Hughes anticipated the bounce better than all the defenders and suddenly found himself running down the right towards goal.  With only the keeper to beat, he unselfishly squared it to Harry Antill who was unmarked in the box. Harry tucked the ball away confidently to grab his first goal of the season and to level the scores at 2-2.

A near identical move a few minutes later nearly results in BU taking the lead but this time Harry's left foot shot was parried wide by the keeper.

Aston and Marvin were playing further up the pitch this half and it was all BU, but SF somehow managed to take the lead again with perhaps their only attack of the second half.

BU continued an all out attack approach, but many of the attacks were going down the right hand side straight through the flooded part which was breaking up the momentum of the attacks but BU didn't let their heads drop and carried on fighting until the final whistle.

Unfortunately BU were unable to find an equaliser but to loose 3-2 to the league leaders away from home on a awful pitch is no mean feat and they should be very proud of themselves and the way they played.

Man of the match was Mervin Noronha for his tackling and distribution in midfield and for covering every blade of mud to provide the link up between defence and attack.

Asfordby Tigers 3-2  Under 9 Cubs (11 Nov 07)

BU were playing against two opponents today - Asfordby Tigers and the weather. Unfortunately, they lost to both.

They started this game very strongly and quickly took the lead through Daniel Hughes.  His mazy dribble from the half way line, saw him beat two defenders and slot the ball past the keeper.

An extended period of pressure and some excellent corners from Harry Antill resulted in BUs second goal which was Aston King's first for the club.  His powerful shot took a deflection on its way to goal and beat the keeper.

BU seemed to be in total control but then AT equalised with the last kick of the first half.  A shot beating Jon Scarfe low down to his left.

The boys were so cold that the half time team talk was kept as brief as possible, but BU were never the same in the second half.  The goal seemed to shatter BU but gave AT the confidence to come out in the second half and have a real go.

Asfordby made an inspired sub by putting on a big forward, who was a real handful for Thomas Zeh Fewkes and Connor Jordan in defence. He turned the game in AT's favour and their inevitable equaliser came in the 2nd minute of the second half.

BU had one or two chances to win the game but their keeper made a few lucky saves that he didn't really know much about.

We also had a clear shout for a penalty turned down when a shot by Aston was heading into goal and struck the raised arm of a AT defender.  It was a clear handball, and the referee put the whistle to his mouth to blow but then decided against it.

To rub salt in the wound, AT scored the winning goal a few minutes later.  BU had nothing left in the tank and were literally frozen to the spot by the cold, wet weather.

Well done boys, you played really well in extremely difficult conditions.

Man of the match was Aston King.

Under 9 Cubs 2 - 0 Netheral Diamonds (04 Nov 2007)

A second win on the trot for the ever improving Cubs.  This time against the team who pipped them to their  league last year.

BU got off to a dream start and scored from their very first attack straight from the kickoff. Daniel Hughes and Josh Ward combined well in midfield to set up Mervin Noronha who made a great run into the box to poke home from close range.

BU never took their foot off the gas and continued to dominate throughout the first half.

Their second goal came after 6 minutes when Aston King set up Daniel Hughes just inside the box. Daniel pulled the trigger and his shot rocketed into into the top right corner of the goal (a carbon copy of last week's goal)

Billy Kaul played well on the left wing in the first half and his delivery from corner kicks was excellent throughout the game.

Josh Ward played at left back for this game - not his usual position, but you wouldn't know from the way he confidentially dealt with the few attacks from ND.  His long passes out of defence were excellent all game.

Mervin and Aston ran their socks off in Midfield and once again provided that crucial link up between the defence and the forwards.

As usual, Connor Jordan was a rock at left back.  Nothing got past him all game, and he won every 50-50 ball ensuring that once again, Jon Scarfe in goal didn't even get his gloves dirty. His distribution up to Daniel, Aston and Mervin was first class.

Alex Nelson and Harry Antil came on for the second half and worked very hard up and down the flanks.  Josh and Harry were combing well down the right and Alex made some great runs into the box and very nearly got on the end of one of Harry's fantastic crosses.

Although the second half was goalless, it was equally well contested.  BU chased every ball and the hungrier team won the game.

Man of the Match was Connor Jordan for his blocking, tackling and distribution.

Hinckley Cobras 0 - 1 Under 9 Cubs (28 October 2007)

The Under 9 Cubs fully deserved their first win of the season.  Daniel Hughes scored after 2 minutes with a right foot shot just inside the area.  BU totally dominated the first half and it was a very quiet half for their Goal Keeper, John Scarfe.  The midfield pairing of, Josh Ward and Marvin Horonha and Sam Kaul on the left wing were playing some excellent football and combining very well with Daniel Hughes up front. When Harry Antil came on the for the injured Marvin he carried on where Marvin left off and  combined well with Daniel and Josh. BU continued to dominate and could have scored a few more before the break. On one attack Josh was totally surrounded by three defenders with his back to goal, and did a cheeky back heel which beat them all. Unfortunately Daniel's shot went just wide.  Although it was a quiet half for the defenders, Connor Jordan and Billy Kaul, they were brilliant at extinguishing the rare attacks from Hinckley and setting up the next attack for BU.

The second half saw Alex Nelson come on in place of Sam Kaul and the team carried on in the same vain.  Daniel was giving their defenders a headache all game and got through one-on-one with the keeper quite a few times.  On one occasion he unselfishly passed to Alex, but Alex's shot went agonisingly wide of the left post.

With their first win on the horizon, BU started to get nervous in the last five minutes and sat back.  Hinckley had several attacks but Connor and Billy were solid in defence, and John plucked a lovely cross out of the sky, and dealt with any other balls with his usual solid handling.

The 1-0 score line doesn't really reflect the dominance BU had in this game.

Well done Cubs - you've got your first win of the season under your belts.

Man of the Match was Daniel Hughes.
