Match Reports

Under 12s 4-1 Westfield Wanderers

Birstall United left it to the final match of the season to secure their position as champions.

A hat trick from Thomas Roalfe and a goal for captain Joe Slater gave Birstall the upper hand when they met Westfield Wanderers at home.

Thomas Roalfe's first touch of the game saw the ball headed home to open the scoring. This was followed by another goal for Roalfe, leaving the half time score at 2-0 to Birstall.

The first minute of the second half saw skipper Joe Slater hold off the defence and beat the keeper from inside the box.

Westfield's scored a superb goal from a distance and Thomas Roalfe completed the scoring and secured his hat-trick declaring the Birstall team champions.

Under 12s 3-1 Kirby Muxloe 88 (20 April 08)

Kirby Muxloe 88 took an early lead against Birstall United in Division three. In what was a very tight first half Birstall had to battle against the very determined opposition.

Captain Joe Slater scored the equaliser from a free kick which dipped underneath the bar. Ryan Orchard scored the second, volleying home a Matt Joinson corner just before half time.

The second half was as close as the first with both sets of attackers keeping the opposite defence on their toes. It was left to midfielder Thomas Baird to score Birstall's third and final goal.

Chances were created and missed at both ends with the final score 3-1 to Birstall.

Under 12s  4-1 Saffron Dynamo (13 April 08)

A hat-trick from Thomas Roalfe secured Birstall United's three points when they entertained Saffron Dynamo at home.

Thomas Roalfe opened the scoring following a cross from Matt Garner. It wasn't until the second half and a superb corner from Max Lewin that Roalfe headed away his second.

Goal number three came thanks to skipper Joe Slater's determination. This was followed swiftly by a converted free kick for Saffron Dynamo.

A deflected shot from Thomas Roalfe closed the scoring. Birstall 4-1 Saffron.

Under 12s  5-2 Allexton & New Parks (6 Apr 08)

Scoring in the first minute and final minute, Matt Garner secured Birstall United's victory, against Allexton & New Parks in Division Three.

Matt Garner stole the ball off a hesitant defence and beat the keeper from close range to open the scoring. Birstall kept up the pressure and created a couple more chances before Ryan Orchard got on the end of a left wing cross to finish at the back post.

Allexton came back into the game scoring directly from a corner and then quickly scoring an equaliser from a right wing cross. Giving the visitors the upper hand until half time and leaving the score 2-2.

The second half started off as a very even affair before Matt Garner beat the keeper with two long range efforts both leaving the keeper with no chance of saving them.

Matt Garner pounced to score his fourth in the last minute to complete the scoring.

Birstall United JFC 5-2 Allexton & New Parks JFC

Westfield Wanderers 1-5 Under 12s

Birstall United met Westfield Wanderers for the first time this season, in a match which saw six goals.

Birstall were first off the mark when striker Matt Garner found the back of the net. This was followed by a goal from Thomas Roalfe and two for Ryan Orchard.

The second half saw Roalfe score his second and Westfield put one away for the final goal of the game.

Final score 5-1 to Birstall United.

Barwell 1-1 Under 12s

Barwell were held at home 1-1 by Birstall in the top of the table clash in Division Three. Birstall took the lead, against the run of play, late in the first half through Matt Garner.

The second half saw Birstall in command but unable to take their chances before Barwell equalised in the last minute.

Under 12s 2-2 Highfield Rangers

Birstall United battled with Highfield Rangers for an hour before taking home a point each.

Highfield were first to score mid way through the first half. Their second goal came shortly afterwards when the ball flew above Birstall's goal keeper Josh Beeching's head.

The second half saw an inspired Birstall with Thomas Roalfe pulling a goal back in the first minute. With everything to play for both teams battled with Birstall having more of the second half chances.

A second goal for Roalfe settled the score. Birstall United 2 Highfield Rangers 2.

Beaumont Town 2-1 Under 12s

Birstall United put in a strong performance to beat fellow title contenders Beaumont Town in Division three.

Beaumont Town started off very strongly and Birstall rode their luck before coming back into the game. Chances were created at both ends before Beaumont took the lead with a shot from the edge of the box buried into the bottom corner of the net.

Birstall came back at the home side and got a deserved equaliser when Thomas Baird was put in to beat the keeper.

The second half was a cracking game of flowing football by both sides superbly decided by Joe Slater's finish from just inside the opposition half.

The game became stretched with the home side going for an equaliser leaving gaps in their defence which led to a goal line clearance preventing a third for the visitors.

The final action led to a superb save by Josh Beeching to earn Birstall the win.

Allexton New Parks 3-9 Under 12s

Two early goals from Thomas Roalfe put Birstall on the road to a victory that was far from comfortable. Birstall sat back and allowed Allexton to pull a goal back and give the visitors a very uneasy time.

Matt Garner restored the two goal cushion before Allexton pulled another goal back to keep everybody on tenterhooks. There was still time for Ryan Orchard to score Birstall's fourth and for the home side to score again and keep the game alive.

The second half began with Birstall having the upper hand but after a couple of scares they broke away and a deflected shot from Thomas Roalfe gave the away side a two goal cushion once more.

Growing in confidence in very awkward conditions Birstall took the game to the home side and Thomas Roalfe completed his hat trick. Matt Garner scored his second of the game finishing off a flowing move which was started by Tom Stafford in defence. Joe Slater intercepted a pass on the outside of the box before bursting into the area and finishing in the corner beyond the keeper's reach.

Allexton kept going and asked plenty of questions of the Birstall defence where Joshua Beeching was outstanding in goal before Ryan Orchard scored his second and Birstall's final goal.

Final score Allexton & New Parks JFC 3-9 Birstall United JFC

 Under 12s 9-1 Kibworth Smeeton

Birstall United entertained Kibworth Smeeton in a game which saw 10 goals.

Leaving the score 4-0 to Birstall at the break.

Birstall played well and created numerous chances before defender Keiran Grant scored from 40 yards out, this was followed by goals for Matt Garner, Ryan Orchard and a goal straight from a corner for Matt Joinson.

Kibworth then scored a consolation goal before Birstall's skipper Joe Slater scored the final goal of the game.

Final score 9-1 to Birstall.

Highfield Rangers 4-5 Under 12s (6 Jan 08)

A nine goal thriller between Highfield Rangers and Birstall United was decided in the last minute of injury time.

The game went from end to end before Highfields took a deserved lead. Birstall battled back and equalised through Matt Garner, and shortly after took the lead when Thomas Roalfe scored his first goal of the game.

Highfields came back and scored two quick goals before Thomas Roalfe scored his second just before half time to level the scores 3-3.

The second half began in similar fashion with Birstall having more of the chances only to find the Highfield's keeper having a solid game.

During the last ten minutes Highfields broke away and scored a fourth and what appeared to be the winning goal.

Superbly led by skipper Joe Slater, Birstall battled on and equalised in the closing minutes when Thomas Roalfe found the back of the net to complete his hat trick.

The game ended on a high thanks to an injury time clincher by Matt Garner securing all three points for Birstall.

Under 12s 8-1 Quorn Juniors (23 Dec 07)

Under 12s v Barwell Athletic (25 Nov 07)

Birstall United entertained top of the table Barwell Athletic at home in a game which saw the under dogs come out victorious.

Early in the first half Birstall were looking strong and dominating the game, but one shot on goal from Barwell caught Birstall on the hop and Barwell opened the scoring.

Birstall's skipper Joe Slater put everything back on even footings when his long range shot ran into the back on the net. This was followed shortly with another goal for Birstall from striker Matt Garner.

A free kick from outside the area was superbly converted by Joe Slater which no goal keeper could have saved. Half time score was 3-1 to Birstall.

Early in the second half Matt Garner hit another home. Barwell replied with a controversial goal (aren't they all!) but the battle continued before Barwell scored once more.

Final score 4-3 to Birstall.

Saffron Dynamo 1-3 Under 12s (18 November)

On a cold wet Sunday afternoon Birstall United crossed town for a match against second in the table Saffron Dynamo, which proved more entertaining than the Eastenders omnibus.

Birstall were caught on the back foot early into the first half when Saffron opened the scoring. Undeterred by being a goal down Birstall battled and the game went from end to end and included some skilful football from both teams.

A free kick by the Birstall skipper Joe Slater just outside the area was neatly converted by the head of Thomas Roalfe bringing the score back to one all.

Shortly before half time Thomas Roalfe scored his second leaving the half time score 2-1 to Birstall.

In the second half the battle and the rain continued. Matt Garner shot, it rebounded, he shot again, it rebounded before Matt Joinson ran in to score the final goal of the game and seal the victory 3-1 to Birstall.

Under 12s 2 - 4 Quorn Juniors (11 November)

Birstall United suffered defeat in the local derby at the hands of Quorn Juniors.

Quorn opened the scoring earlier in the first half, Birstall replied when Ryan Orchard found the back of the net following a corner.

Quorn quickly came back to go 2-1 up at half time.

In the second half Birstall were denied chance after chance by Quorn's strong defence. However Quorn broke away and found the back of the net, followed by another goal while Birstall had a player injured.

Birstall managed to pull another goal back thanks to a penalty in the last minute of the game which was neatly converted by Max Lewin. Final score was 4-2 to Quorn.

St Joseph's 0-3 Under 12s (04 Nov 07)

Birstall United travelled to St Joseph's in the second round of the County Cup.

Birstall created several first half chances which they failed to convert. The half time score was 0-0.

Following a short corner from Max Lewin Matt Garner headed the ball into the back of the net early in the second half.

The end to end match continued with Ryan Orchard scoring with this being followed by a second goal for striker Matt Garner. Birstall's defence was never fully tested and all players had a great performance.

The full-time score was Birstall 3 St Jospeh's 0, seeing Birstall safely through to the third round of the cup.

Kirby Muxloe 4 - 6 Under 12s (28 Oct 07)

Birstall travelled in the rain to Kirby Muxloe in a match which included 10 goals and a hat-trick for Birstall's Thomas Roalfe.

A goal from Thomas Roalfe in the first minute saw Kirby on the run, this was followed by a second for Roalfe before Birstall conceded their first goal of the game. Birstall replied shortly afterwards with a goal from Matthew Joinson leaving the half-time score 3-1 to Birstall.

The second half saw three goals for each side and began in a similar way as the first half with Thomas Roalfe scoring and completing his hat-trick in the first minute. Kirby soon replied with a goal sweeping above the keeper Josh Beeching's head, this was closely followed by another (4-3).

Birstall scored twice more with goals from Matt Garner and Max Lewin before Kirby came back once more leaving the final score 6-4 to Birstall.

 Kibworth Smeeton 1-1 Birstall United U12s (14 Oct 07)

Birstall United travelled to Kibworth Smeeton for their second away league game this year and came away with a point.

Birstall were first off the mark with a fabulous free kick neatly converted by skipper Joe Slater, this was followed later in the first half with a goal from Kibworth Smeeton.

What followed, was end to end football with either side looking likely to steal a goal at any moment, however the final score was 1-1.

 Birstall United U12s 4-3 Beaumont Town (07 Oct 07)

Birstall's first home League game of the season had all supporters on the edge of their seats for the full 60 minutes plus stoppage time.

With a total of seven goals, Matt Garner opened the scoring for Birstall early in the first half. However, Beaumont Town saw their chances and scored just before half time to see a 1-1 draw.

After the break Birstall came back and pulled ahead with a goal from Ryan Orchard, again this lead was equalised, 2-2 by a strong Beaumont Town team.

Birstall became the underdogs for the first time during the game when another goal from Beaumont shot into the back of the net which no keeper could have saved.

Now on the back foot Birstall battled all the way before a free kick from Joe Slater found Matt Joinson's boot and the back of the net.

With 15 minutes and everything to play for both teams battled and the game went from end to end before Matt Garner finally found the back of the net to leave Birstall victorious. The final result from what was a most entertaining game was 4-3.

Braunston Frith 0 - 5 Birstall United U12s  (30 September 07)

A group of travellers on the Birstall pitch forced them to give up the home advantage in the second round of the County Cup.

Braunstone Frith played host to the game which saw Birstall run home 5 nil winners and two hat-tricks for Thomas Roalfe in two consecutive games.

Don't be fooled into thinking this game was a walkover, Birstall may have taken early control of the game and some fabulous goal keeping from Braunstone Frith kept Birstall at bay despite several chances.

Just before half time Thomas Roalfe opened the scoring with the first goal for Birstall.

During the second half the game could have gone either way at any time and Birstall's keeper Josh Beeching pulled off some spectacular saves to keep Birstall's cup chances alive.

With 15 minutes to the final whistle and the possibility of extra time and penalties never being ruled out, Birstall managed to finally find the back of the net once more at the feet of Thomas Roalfe who then went on to score a third and his hat-trick. This was closely followed by goals from Joe Slater and Matt Garner.

Both sides battled to the end in a game that saw Birstall triumph and into the second round of the County Cup.

Birstall United U12s 12 - 0 Asfordby Amateurs  (16 September 07)

Birstall United put in a clinical performance to overcome Asfordby Amateurs in the County Cup. Six goals in each half saw Birstall through this preliminary round of the County Cup.

The goals came from Thomas Roalfe (3), Matt Garner (2), Kieran Grant (2), Alex Hazell (2), Joe Slater, Ryan Orchard and Thomas Baird wrapped up the scoring with his debut goal for the club.

Asfordby never gave up and battled to end.

Fleckney Athletic 3-1 Birstall United U12s (12 September 07)

Birstall u12s battled all the way but went out of the league cup at second division Fleckney. Early goals in both halves took the game away from them, and despite having good periods of pressure only had a goal from Matt Garner to show for what was a very good performance.

Birstall United 2004 1-0 Thurlaston Magpies (12 September 07)

On a Thursday evening Birstall United were against Thurlaston Magpies in a cup match. After a not so encouraging start to our season we were looking for a better team effort from all of our squad. We decided to change our defence to a new 4 line comprising of Joe Dolby, Dan Middleton, Niall O'Conner and Elliott Harrison. this proved to be a very strong defence with the combination of strength and speed. Frazer had little to do in goal due to our new defence. The midfield listened well through training and every opportunity passed the ball out wide where we could exploit the wings and then cross into the oppositions danger zone. The first half was very equal and also very fast and the result at half time was 0-0 and the game at this point was very tense.

Second half began as the first although Birstall were having more shots at goal only to be denied by Thurlastons excellent goalkeeper. An uncommon mistake by Dan let Thurlaston through who took advantage and scored. 1-0 Thurlaston. This made Birstall more determined to fight on and level the game. All players were getting tired as the match never slowed down. Time was ticking down and it looked like through all our efforts and possession of the ball it wasn't going to be our night. Then in the last dying seconds of the match Lewis Platts shot home the goal to level the match taking us into extra time.

The five minutes passed by quickly to no-ones advantage which then lead us to a penalty shoot out.

Our five chosen takers: Dan Middleton, Connor Byrne, Joe Dolby, Niall O'Connor and Kacey Elliot.

We were to take the first spot kick by Dan who blasted it past the keeper. 1-0 Birstall.
Thurlaston unfortunately shot wide. 1-0 Birstall.
Connor and Joe both under pressure both missed the target though Niall O'Connor secured our victory as Thurlaston didn't score through an ice, cool Frazer.

Well done to all the team who played the best match we have seen in a long time. Apologies to those who didn't get a full game although we appreciate your support.

Man of the Match went to Frazer for a first class goalkeeping display.

Loughborough Youth 2 - 2 Birstall United U12's (9 Sep 07)

A goal in each half for both teams saw Loughborough Youth FC and Birstall Utd draw 2-2.

Birstall were first to strike with a penalty clinically put away by Max Lewin. The hosts came back into the game and an unfortunate mistake in defence allowed Loughborough to equalise and gain the upper hand until half time.

Birstall got back on top in the second half and substitute James Darlison put Thomas Roalfe clear in the penalty area to restore the lead for Birstall only for Loughborough to equalise again from a late corner.

Kirby Muxloe 88 0 - 4 Birstall United U12's (2 Sep 07)

Two goals in each half saw Birstall United overcome Kirby Muxloe 88 4-0 in the first round of the Thyme & Day cup.

Joe Slater opened the scoring after a corner kick and a second quickly followed from Joe Carter who tucked in a cross from Ryan Orchard at the near post.

It was two late goals that finally clinched the victory for the visitors scoring through Matt Garner and a second for Joe Slater.
