Leicester City Foxes 2-1 Birstall United U 11’s
Vixens (20 April 08)
Birstall United U 11’s Vixens for their final game of the season returned to a
cold Judgemeadow to play Leicester City Foxes but came away defeated at 2-1.
As occurred when these two teams last week, play started at a fast pace with
good moves from both sides.
Leicester were the first to make an attempt on goal but this was stopped by an
energetic Birstall team. The ball then moved to the Leicester end with some fine
footwork by Collins, Gunn, Wortley and Harris but the ball stayed out of the
net.
Leicester then made a move and successfully kicked the ball past Birstall’s
Hayward to score their first goal.
Not to be outdone Birstall ran for the goal with some fine passing between
Collins, Gunn and Harris with Collins kicking the ball only for it to hit the
woodwork.
Leicester again responded with a run for the goal but the ball was picked up by
Birstall who made a fast run back up the pitch. Wortley kicked the ball towards
the net and this rebounded off a Leicester player into their net.
With the score equal both teams had it all to play for however following this
goal, Birstall seemed to lose a few seconds of concentration and Leicester
quickly added their second goal.
In the second half both teams carried on at the same pace with some fine saves
from both Birstall’s Hayward and the Leicester keeper preventing the score from
changing.
Georgia Harris was awarded Birstall’s Player of the Match.

Gunn soon opened the score line for Birstall with a cheeky kick past the
Leicester goal keeper.
Leicester however kept up the pressure and Birstall were lucky not to concede a
goal before half time.
The second half started with Birstall’s goal keeper Hayward making a fine save

Weddington Thistle 2 - 1 Birstall United Belles (4
Nov 07)
Birstall United Belle's recent turn of form was halted by a more physical
Weddington side when the two sides met.
The Belles were able to put aside the last meetings scoreline and started off
strong with Beth Johnson And Renaise Carter again causing problems in the
midfield and testing the Weddington goalkeeper on several occasions.
Birstall should have took the lead in the first half when creative play on
the left by Carter allowed her to cross the ball and beat the flat defence to
find Zoe Elson unmarked at the far post but her shot somehow was kept out and
the subsequent ping pong of shots eventually see the ball collected by a
grateful Thistle's keeper.
Johnson then had an effort from far beating the keeper but saw the ball go
agonisingly wide, the half ended goalless and Weddington knew they had to up the
game if they were to beat the resilient Belles.
The second half saw the home team change goalkeepers to allow the previous
keeper to launch the long ball that the home team resorted to, it was from such
a ball that they scored there first goal and took a lead against the run of
play.
Belles almost immediately drew level with a scorching run through the middle
from Johnson who laid the ball of the Carter to slot home and silence the home
crowd.
The game then became a battle of strength which unfortunately Belles lost
with several strong challenges leaving Belles players on the floor with
strangely no free kicks and baiting from the side line the Belles, in there
first season were distracted and Weddington were able to grab a goal to regain
the lead.
The home team then put all their players behind the ball and rode out the
rest of the game with the Belles desperately unlucky not to get at least a point
out of the game.
Player of the match was Helena Bolingbroke for Birstall who came off the
pitch battered and bruised from the unpunished challenges as she stood up to the
Weddington attack with dignity and composure.
Birstall may have lost this game but they came aware with their pride intact
having not reverted to the level of the hosts and continued to play football as
it should be at this age group.

regular intervals.
Seven minutes in and following a cross by Harris, Gunn for Birstall planted the
ball firmly in the back of the net.

managed to slip the ball between the keeper’s legs for Birstall’s second.
This was quickly followed by Gunn adding a third to Birstall tally.
The second half started with both teams sharing possession however it was
Harris who added the fourth for Birstall with a powerful kick from 15 metres
missing the fingers of Oadby’s keeper.

midfield with Birstall’s Player of the Match going to Emily Carnan.

Vixens (7 Oct 07)

not to be. Leicester won 2 - 1 with, on the day, better football.
The first half started with Leicester showing greater potential and this was
duly rewarded by their first goal with a run from the centre line. Leicester
quickly capitalised on this with their second goal.
Birstall seemed not to have the energy shown in previous matches however Gunn
finally scored a goal for Birstall.
The second half started better for Birstall with much of the ball possession
however despite a valiant header by Gunn which went over the net and some good
play from Preston, Carnan and Birstall's Player of the Match, Harris, no further
goals were scored by either team.

minute later with Harris adding to Birstall's tally.
The second half started with equal speed however Leicester could not keep up
with Birstall's pace with Harris scoring a further superb goal from the far
side. This again was quickly followed by Gunn running from the centre and
pounding the back of the net.
Leicester played good football but good midfield work by Birstall's new

Lucy Hayward kept them from scoring any more goals.

07)

excellent display away against a more Physical Hinckley United team who took the

despite good possession and and attempts at goal.
The second half saw Hinckley take the advantage and attempt to defend the
slender lead But Birstall had other ideas, they stepped up a gear and in the
last quarter Carter lost the 4 players assigned to mark her and found the back
of the net to level the score and player of the match Johnson started Her goal
tally for the Belles to deservedly take all 3 points.

the first half with Birstall’s third.
Asfordby showed enthusiasm and made a number of good attempts only for Hayward
to hold the ball.
The second half started with flowing football from Emily Gunn and Harris. Gunn
scored two quick goals with the fifth just creeping into the net.
Stella Hale was brought on and quickly rewarded the team with two further fine
goals. Although the score line doesn’t reflect it Asfordby played with
determination. Birstall’s Player of the Match went to Bayley Kay for her work in
defence.
Allexton New parks Aces 1 - 2 Birstall United Belles
(16 Sep 07)
Birstall Belles got their league account up and running when they travelled to
Allexton Aces and took all 3 points.
The home team started stronger and deservedly took the lead in the first half
before Birstall were in the game and took the advantage into the second half.
Belles then started to establish some dominance with player of the match Helena
Bolingbroke outstanding as captain.
The equaliser came somewhat fortunate for Birstall when Alysha Patel
deflected a shot off an Aces defender to find the back of the net but it was no
more than the Belles deserved.
Renaise Carter grabbed victory for Birstall when a rasping free kick beat the
keeper and powered into the top corner of the goal to give the Belles a hard
fought but deserved win.
Birstall United Vixens 2 -0 Asfordby Amateurs
Diamonds (9 Sep 07)
Birstall United Vixens Under 11's team played their first home game on their
new home pitch at Meadow Lane against Asfordby Diamonds.
The first half started with eager play from both teams with the game quickly
developing with some rapid passing of the ball by both teams. Courtney Preston
and Ella Wortley for Birstall made some quick moves with attempts on goal
however good saves by the Asfordby keeper managed to ensure the ball stayed out
of the net.
Georgia Harris for Birstall then had a strong shot only for the ball to hit the
crossbar.
This was soon followed by Asfordby only just missing the goal again with the
ball hitting the top corner of the crossbar.
Towards the end of the first half a pass by Emily Gunn enabled Harris to head
the ball past the Asfordby keeper into the net.
The second half started with equally quick football from both teams however it
was Birstall with some good passing by Emily Carnan, Preston and Harris that
allowed Gunn to score Birstall’s second goal.
Asfordby didn’t give up and it was only through some good saves by Lucy Hayward
that Birstall kept the score at 2 – 0 with Wortley being named Birstall’s Player
of the Match.
Birstall United Belles 1 - 7 Weddington Thistle (9 Sep
07)
Birstall United Belles played their first ever competitive match and were on the
wrong end of a 7-1 scoreline.
The encounter started well for the Belles with player of the match Renaise
Carter making some intelligent and strong runs in the midfield and narrowly
missing the goal on several occasions.
Paula Wilmot in defence stood up to the Weddington attack well and Jodie Rushton
showed some neat skills down the wing.
However, Weddington's experience soon started to show and they were able to take
advantage of the possession football that they were playing and soon the Belles
were 4 goals down.
Remi Sergeant in goal could do little about the goals and with some fine saves
was able to keep the scoreline down.
Carter got her reward with another strong run from midfield taking the ball to
the right and releasing a powerful shot which found the bottom corner of the
Weddington goal. This seemed to give Birstall some hope and they continued to
improve throughout the game only to be hit with another 3 goals to give a rather
flattering scoreline in the end which did not reflect the effort of the Belles
as a whole.
