Hinckley United under 15’s vs. Birstall United under
15’s (9th October 2011)
For the first meeting this season between Birstall United Vixens under 15’s and
Hinckley United it appeared at first sight that it could be un uphill struggle
for Birstall to recover from last weeks defeat due to the slope of the Hinckley
pitch.
Hinckley kicked off and with the slope in their favour immediately moved the
ball down to the Birstall end.
Birstall however were ready and kicked the ball back towards the Hinckley end.
Ella Wortley took possession moving the ball on to Emily Gunn who flicked the
ball to Helena Bolingbroke who just could not keep pace with the ball with the
keeper holding firm.
Hinckley’s goal kick sailed well into the Birstall half landing at the feet of a
Hinckley player. She turned and moved towards the Birstall goal. Running along
she was tackled by Emily Carnan who made the ball safe for Birstall.
The ball returned to the Hinckley half and went out for a corner to Birstall.
Courtney Preston took the corner which was intercepted by Birstall Captain
Georgia Harris who kicked the ball at full pace into the hands of the Hinckley
keeper. The keeper almost dropped the ball but just managed to hold on.
Hinckley retaliated and ran up the pitch tackling on the way only to be stopped
by Preston who had quickly returned to mid field.
Both teams were playing good football with a number of attempts on goal.
Just fourteen minutes in and Hinckley were awarded a penalty for handball in the
area.
They took the shot but the ball went wide.
Birstall took the goal kick but just seconds later another penalty was awarded
to Hinckley.
This time the ball found its target. Hinckley had taken the lead. This however
was not to last long.
Three minutes later Birstall put a move on Hinckley. Poppy Gordon ran up the
wing at speed passing to Stella Hale. Gordon had moved forward and called for
the ball back. Hale obliged and with Hinckley players closing in Gordon lifted
the ball to Gunn who equalised.
With the slope at Birstall’s disadvantage new blood was needed to continue the
Birstall attack.
Bree Williams and Sarah Olsen replaced Wortley and Hale.
Within seconds Williams almost took the lead from a superb corner ball kicked by
Preston. The ball just went wide.
Birstall were starting to heap the pressure onto Hinckley who despite the
benefit of the slope could not match Birstall’s finesse and ability to make
every pass count.
All the Birstall players were playing to win and when Hinckley did try to attack
they were stopped in their tracks by a fine tackle by Paula Wilmot who passed
the ball to Birstall keeper Emily Jane Gordon.
She kicked the ball back up the pitch. Poppy Gordon took it and moved it on to
Gunn. Gunn turned and passed to Williams who tapped the ball into the net.
Birstall had taken the lead.
Just two minutes later Gunn added her second from a long ball by Olsen and just
a minute after this Poppy Gordon again ran up the pitch and lifted the ball over
the Hinckley players into the area for Gunn to score her hat trick.
In just three minutes of play Birstall had effectively made the result safe even
before the half time whistle.
HALF-TIME Hinckley United 1 Birstall United Vixens 4
The whistle blew and perhaps Birstall would hold back but this was most
definitely not the case.
Hale and Gunn immediately ran towards the Hinckley end and it was only due to a
fine safe by the Hinckley keeper that the score was not added to.
This was just a lull.
Beth Batson took control of the ball from another Hinckley goal kick. She ran at
pace down the wing carefully passing to Harris. Harris tapped the ball to Poppy
Gordon. Gordon took aim and powered the ball in past the keeper.
Just seven minutes later the Birstall onslaught continued.
This time Olsen took the initiative. She ran fast beating the Hinckley mid field
and lifted the ball to Hale. Hale took possession and almost on the line and at
a very acute angle slotted the ball into the net between the keeper and the side
post.
Birstall were now playing with the Hinckley side knowing that there position was
safe and showing many fine skills with the ball.
This was confirmed as Gunn added her fourth just a minute later again from a
Poppy Gordon cross and with Hale covering the ball just in case Gunn missed the
target.
Birstall’s Emily Jane Gordon was perhaps feeling lonely in goal as most of the
play was in the Hinckley half but she didn’t show any delay in coming out to
attack when the Hinckley side did have a break.
Birstall’s defence of Carnan, Bayley Kay and Georgia Kirk also played their part
in stopping any Hinckley runs with Kirk making a number of fine tackles to
disappoint the opposition.
Harris made another attempt on goal, jumping up and around the Hinckley players
as she tried to score. This time without success.
Preston was having good practice with a number of corners and one resulted in
another goal.
She played a short ball to Harris who in her usual style flicked the ball to
Wortley who turned and powered the ball into the net.
With two touches from the spot Birstall almost added another goal when Williams
passed to Poppy Gordon who from just in the Hinckley half took aim only for the
ball to land in the keepers hands.
Soon after this Birstall were awarded a free kick. Harris stepped up and kicked
the ball again into the keeper’s hands.
Another short corner was taken by Gunn with Harris again taking control and
almost scoring.
Ten minutes had passed since the last goal and so it was time for another.
Harris was again involved with a superb cross to Gunn who was to the side of the
goal. Williams had quickly moved into the area. Gunn passed the ball for
Williams to add her second goal.
The game was coming to its end but Birstall were not quite finished.
With just seconds to go Wortley took the ball and raced down the wing. She
passed to Gunn. Gunn took a shot but the ball bounced off the keeper. Poppy
Gordon was in the right place and scored Birstall’s tenth goal.
The final whistle blew on what had ended up being Birstall’s biggest goal tally
in a League game since the side’s inception.
Hinckley, whilst soundly beaten, could take some pride in that when they did
have chances they always took them.

Birstall United under 15’s vs. Loughborough Foxes
under 15’s (2nd October 2011)
On a very hot day Birstall United Vixens under 15’s took on Loughborough Foxes.
From the whistle Loughborough showed an improvement on there previous encounter
with Birstall and immediately tested Birstall keeper EJ Gordon who had to move
out to capture the ball.
Birstall came back with Poppy Gordon having a shot on goal only for the
Loughborough keeper to hold.
The goal kick landed at the feet of Birstall’s Bayley Kay who ran up the wing,
passing to Georgia Harris who flicked the ball to Stella Hale. She took aim but
the ball went just over the cross bar.
Birstall were having more possession with all the action being in the
Loughborough half but they couldn’t break past the keeper with Loughborough’s
defence protecting the stand in keeper.
Birstall’s Ella Wortley then took her chance, passing to Poppy Gordon, who
passed to Emily Gunn. Gunn powered the ball towards the goal but without success
as again the keeper held firm.
Just nine minutes in and Coalville made the break from a goal kick.
There quick strikers took off, tackling Birstall’s Emily Carnan and Courtney
Preston on the way. At ten metres out the ball was launched sailing over the
finger tips of EJ Gordon and into the net.
Birstall immediately hit back when just one minute later Hale took control,
running at full pace, and passed the ball to Gunn. Gunn had to work hard as
three of Loughborough’s players closed her down, but she succeeded in equalising
the score.
Four corners were taken by Birstall after this and in very quick succession and
despite all landing on target in front of the goal neither could be converted
into goals.
Sarah Olsen and Helena Bolingbroke replaced Beth Batson and Ella Wortley and
Olsen was straight into the action using her pace to move the ball on down the
wing.
Both teams were playing well but neither could make that illusive scoring
breakthrough.
Wortley and Harris again made a move with some fine passing running up the pitch
and letting Gunn take over. Gunn raced along but being closed down by four
players she lost possession.
The half time whistle blew.
HALF-TIME Birstall United Vixens 1 Loughborough Foxes 1
Bree Williams and Paula Wilmot were brought on to move Birstall up a gear but
still no break through could be made.
Birstall’s Harris was brought down, just three minutes in, and had to be taken
off being replaced by Beth Batson.
Loughborough were always alert and as soon as Birstall had a chance on goal the
Loughborough manager would call for their players to protect the keeper. This
they did to an excellent level. This was perhaps the reason that Birstall could
not make their breakthrough.
Williams took the ball, crossed it to Gunn who passed to Bolingbroke. The keeper
was on her own but this time the ball was kicked just too high.
Wortley and Poppy Gordon made runs shortly after but again without success.
Loughborough’s strikers were always ready to accept the ball and sure enough
when they had the chance they took it. A loose ball by Birstall allowed this to
happen. Despite being closed down by Carnan and Kay they were just too quick and
beat EJ Gordon to score.
Just a few minutes later they repeated this move to score again.
Birstall hit back with Poppy Gordon using her powerful boot to move the ball
from the Birstall half to the feet of Williams. Williams turned back and forth
to escape the Loughborough attack and again passed to Gunn who finished the move
off with her nineteenth goal of the season.
Perhaps Birstall could taste at least a draw but this was soon proved to be a
bitter taste as Loughborough were awarded a penalty for a hand ball in the area.
Loughborough stepped up and scored effectively sealing Birstall’s fate.
Birstall had played well throughout but luck was just not on their side, as they
had by far had more attempts on goal.

CoalvilleTown Ravenettes under 15’s vs Birstall
United Vixens under 15’s (25th September 2011)
Birstall United Vixens under 15’s visited Owen Street to take on Coalville Town
Ravenettes.
Birstall’s Emily Gunn kicked off passing the ball to Helena Bolingbroke.
Birstall seemed to be a little lacklustre as Coalville took control of the ball.
Birstall didn’t seem to have an answer and sure enough Coalville took the attack
to the Birstall keeper EJ Gordon and scored after just five minutes.
Coalville continued the onslaught with a further run on goal which was only
stopped by a typical Bayley Kay high speed interception putting the Coalville
striker off course.
A corner was awarded to Coalville.
The ball went high and was deflected off a Birstall’s player’s hand.
The whistle blew with a penalty awarded against Birstall.
Up stepped the Coalville player with EJ Gordon taking her position to defend the
goal. A powerful kick ensued with the ball going straight to Gordon’s hands. The
goal was saved.
Birstall’s player’s cheered and this seemed to galvanise the team into punishing
the Coalville squad for this error.
Immediately Birstall pushed forward with Georgia Harris, Bolingbroke and Gunn
racing towards the Coalville. With a deft touch Harris moved the ball to Gunn
who lifted the ball high and over the keeper to score.
Equality was short lived as within just two minutes Birstall took the lead,
again from the boot of Gunn who finished off some superb footwork by Ella
Wortley and Stella Hale.
It was amazing to see how Birstall could change in just a few minutes into the
dominant side.
Birstall again took hold of the ball. This time with Sarah Olsen in the mix, who
with Wortley and Hale, passed the ball down the left wing. Wortley kicked the
ball onto Gunn who scored her third.
Coalville continued to threaten with their strikers being particularly quick,
testing the Birstall defence of Emily Carnan, Poppy Gordon and Bayley Kay who
never failed to stop the ball.
Beth Batson was brought on for Bolingbroke and this was immediately followed by
another substitution for Courtney Preston who was brought down and injured.
Paula Wilmot took her place.
Batson was on the case straight the way running down the wing passing the ball
to Harris who took aim only for the keeper to hold.
Bree Williams was brought on for Gunn.
Coalville took a corner but this time the ball went out rolling along the top of
the net.
Just a few minutes later Birstall were awarded a corner. This time the result
would be better. Poppy Gordon lifted the ball up landing it in front of the
Coalville net.
Batson secured the ball and passed it to Harris who powered the ball into the
net.
Birstall now went into half time with a secure advantage.
HALF-TIME Coalville Town Ravenettes 1 Birstall United Vixens 4
Birstall pushed from the whistle and just ten minutes in Birstall would again
add to the score line.
Williams and Batson were again involved as they tackled Coalville. Williams
passed the ball to Gunn. She took aim. The ball hit the keeper and bounced off
the post only for Gunn to follow through and tap the ball in.
Coalville didn’t have an answer to Birstall’s might with every player playing
some superb football.
When Coalville did move towards the Birstall goal, EJ Gordon was always ready to
come out and secure the ball for Birstall.
On the one occasion when Gordon was beaten, Batson had moved in to hold fort
pushing the ball off the line.
Gordon took the goal kick and the ball sailed high into the Coalville half.
Harris stopped the ball and flicked it back to Williams. She turned and moved
the ball back to Harris who had pushed forward. Harris passed it to Wortley who
powered the ball towards the Coalville net only for the ball to go wide.
This time Coalville’s goal kick landed in the Birstall half but was immediately
kicked back into Coalville’s half. A free kick was awarded to Birstall.
Up stepped Harris who kicked a short ball to Poppy Gordon. Gordon kicked the
ball high up over the Coalville keeper to score Birstall’s sixth goal.
Birstall were always on the attack with Wilmot this time taking the chance. She
ran off down the wing covering half the pitch, moving the ball on, only for
Coalville to kick it out.
The game was now heading towards its end but Birstall still had a sting in there
tail.
Hale, Olsen and Wortley made a move on Coalville passing quickly to set up the
ball for Williams who tapped the ball into the net.
The final whistle blew and Birstall could be proud of how they turned the game
around from a shaky start.

Ibstock Town under 15’s vs Birstall United Vixens
under 15’s (18th September 2011)
County Cup Quarter Finals
Birstall United Vixens under 15’s took on Ibstock Town in the first match of
this season’s County Cup.
From the off Birstall were taking the game to Ibstock with Georgia Harris,
following a well aimed cross from Beth Batson, having the first shot within
three minutes with a powerful shot that hit the cross bar.
Just a minute later Harris kicked from twenty yards only for the ball to go
straight to the keeper.
Ibstock, despite the previous meeting of these two teams when Ibstock suffered a
heavy defeat to Birstall were always ready to threaten and sure enough when they
made a run for goal Birstall were left behind.
This time Birstall’s keeper Emily Jane Gordon ran out to hold the ball.
Ibstock were continually pressuring Birstall and inevitably it would be Ibstock
who made the first effect to the score line.
They took a short corner and lifted the ball up towards the Birstall goal
beating EJ Gordon. Ibstock now thought they had taken the upper hand; however
this was to be short lived as just three minutes later Birstall equalised when
Emily Gunn tackling four players on her way powered the ball into the net.
This seemed to waken Birstall and thus followed some fine footwork by Poppy
Gordon, Bree Williams and Ella Wortley who were controlling the mid field.
Birstall’s Bayley Kay moved up from defence and from the centre line took a long
shot at goal. This time the ball just sailed wide.
Just a minute later a corner was awarded to Birstall. Poppy Gordon took it and
landed it at the feet of Williams. Williams was quickly closed down by two
Ibstock players but she had time to pass it to Gunn who scored her second.
Ibstock immediately bounced back and again tested EJ Gordon’s agility with the
ball only just being punched over the cross bar as she jumped up.
HALF-TIME Ibstock 1 Birstall United Vixens 2
Stella Hale, Helena Bolingbroke and Sarah Olsen replaced Bree Williams, Georgia
Kirk and Beth Batson in the second half.
From the whistle Ibstock showed that they had the fighting spirit and this was
rewarded just a minute later when they equalised.
Equality was short lived as again Birstall struck back within a minute when Gunn
scored her third with a fine shot that deflected off the keeper into the net.
Frenetic play ensued with two corners taken by Birstall’s Courtney Preston both
landing on the spot only for Ibstock to push the ball out.
Wortley was, as always, strong down the wing and took aim at the goal from ten
yards only for the ball to go wide.
Bolingbroke was playing her part for Birstall taking on Ibstock when needed and
skilfully passing the ball on.
Ibstock came back again and raced up the pitch. Birstall followed but Ibstock
were too quick, again equalising with a power shot that beat EJ Gordon.
Both teams had it all to play for and were very equally matched however it would
be Birstall who would score again.
A free kick was awarded to Birstall.
Poppy Gordon stepped up. The goal was in range at fifteen yards. She kicked the
ball up, and despite the keeper jumping up, the ball hit the back of the net.
Ibstock again came straight back and ran towards the Birstall end. It looked as
though they had the advantage but this was not so as Emily Carnan slid under the
legs of the Ibstock attacker kicking the ball out.
The minutes were ticking away and Birstall just need another goal to feel
secure.
Bolingbroke took the ball from the centre line, tackling and turning back to
escape the Ibstock players. She crossed the ball again to Gunn who secured
Birstall’s win with a chip past the keeper.
Immediately Wortley also tried to add to Birstall’s score with a great shot but
this time the keeper kicked the ball out.
The final whistle blew on a match that had shown both teams strengths.

Oadby & Wigston United vs Birstall United Vixens
under 15’s (11th September 2011)
On a blustery day Birstall United Vixens under 15’s played their first away game
against Oadby & Wigston.
Birstall started strongly with Stella Hale and Emily Gunn starting from the spot
and within the first two minutes moving the ball onto Ella Wortley who made a
run towards goal only for the Oadby keeper to hold.
Just minutes later the first of many corners was taken by Birstall’s Poppy
Gordon, who using the wind, managed to curl the ball in only for the keeper to
hold the ball again.
Birstall were in there stride and continuing to pressure Oadby at every
opportunity. Sarah Olsen was particularly strong down the left wing tackling and
passing the ball on to Birstall’s strikers.
Oadby, when they did get the ball, showed merit in how they could turn the ball
back towards the Birstall end but they had omitted to consider the strength of
Birstall’s defence. Oadby ran at full pace but Bayley Kay equalled that and
tackled the ball to turn it back around.
Hale, who again showed great pace down the right wing, took off tackling five
Oadby players kicking the ball towards the Oadby keeper who again proved to have
very sticky gloves holding onto the ball once more.
Birstall were eager to make a break through and sure enough, just eight minutes
in, this was to happen.
Olsen again had the ball and running along she crossed the ball to Gunn who
scored.
From the spot Hale again took possession of the ball, running quickly down the
pitch. She kicked the ball high for Gunn to take aim but this time the ball hit
the crossbar.
A good goal kick by Oadby allowed there team to move up the pitch to challenge
Birstall’s keeper EJ Gordon. Gordon held firm, as she would throughout the game,
and despite a very fast ball coming her way she punched the ball back up the
pitch.
This allowed Birstall’s Captain Georgia Harris, to run towards the Oadby end.
With her usual style she launched the ball up and towards the keeper. The keeper
stopped the ball, however it bounced out of her hands only for Gunn who had ran
up to the goal to cheekily kick the ball in.
Just five minutes later and from a superb Courtney Preston throw in; Harris was
to make her scoring mark on the game with a header into the back of the net.
Birstall were on a roll and making regular well aimed attempts on goal. Only
Oadby’s keeper was keeping the score line at a reasonable level.
Helena Bolingbroke was brought on for Kay and was immediately in the action
tackling the ball from Oadby.
Oadby again made a run for it down the left wing. This time it was defender
Emily Carnan who with her sliding tackle made the ball safe.
Hale again made a good move down the left, passing to Wortley who passed to
Gunn. She launched the ball but again the keeper held firm.
Hale was soon to add Birstall’s fourth.
She raced at pace tackling on the way and kicked the ball towards the keeper.
The ball landed in her hands but slipped out and rolled into the net.
With half time approaching and despite a number of good corners taken by
Birstall’s Preston and Poppy Gordon the score remained unchanged.
HALF-TIME Oadby & Wigston 0 Birstall United Vixens 4
Bree Williams and Georgia Kirk replaced Stella Hale and Paula Wilmot for
Birstall.
The rain was starting to fall and Oadby appeared to come back on with a greater
determination.
Birstall were holding back with Oadby making more attempts on goal.
Preston was working hard to wrest the ball from Oadby and Kirk, in defence for
Birstall, made some fine tackles to help.
Birstall came back with Harris passing a long ball to Wortley who passed onto
Gunn who kicked the ball wide in front of the goal.
Williams was this time in action supported by Gunn and Wortley but without
success.
Kay came back on to replace Olsen.
It looked as through the score would remain the same as Birstall, despite a fine
attempt by Bolingbroke, couldn’t get past the Oadby keeper.
Oadby again challenged the Birstall end and again it was Kay who chased the
Oadby player down to take possession.
Birstall now seemed to get back their mojo from the first half and with a fine
third goal from Gunn who took advantage of an excellent cross by Poppy Gordon
they were back at full steam ahead.
Paula Wilmot was brought back on to replace Preston.
The game was reaching it’s conclusion but Birstall always play to the final
whistle.
It hadn’t blown yet and with some fine passing between Gunn and Poppy Gordon,
Williams was to get her rewards for some hard work in the second half when she
powered the ball into the Oadby net.
The final whistle blew and Birstall could look back on a game where every player
had played a part in another excellent victory.

Birstall United Vixens under 15’s vs Ibstock Town
(4th September 2011)
With the first game of the season Birstall were raring to go and sure enough
from the whistle Birstall moved straight up into the Ibstock half.
Birstall’s Helena Bolingbroke, Georgia Harris and Emily Gunn took the ball with
some fine passing.
Ibstock then took control and as Birstall had done, raced up towards the
Birstall end. They hadn’t reckoned on the Birstall defence of Emily Carnan and
Bayley Kay who closed Ibstock down and booted the ball back up the pitch.
Harris took the loose ball and kicked it high with Gunn accepting the ball. She
kicked wide with the Ibstock keeper just holding.
Just eleven minutes in Birstall took the lead.
Kay took control and passed to Harris who with great control passed it to Gunn.
Gunn took aim with the ball sailing high over the keeper’s hands into the net.
Birstall were attacking at every opportunity with Sarah Olsen also taking a shot
at goal, again from a Harris cross.
Ibstock fought back, running quickly down the left flank, only to be intercepted
by Kay who in her usual style tackled the ball and kicked it back up the pitch.
Stella Hale replaced Kay and Hale immediately helped to move the ball back into
the grasp of Gunn, Ella Wortley and Poppy Gordon who took a shot that went just
too wide.
Ibstock again came back and it was only with a deft display of goal keeping
skill by Emily Jane Gordon that kept Ibstock from equalising.
The goal kick was taken with Poppy Gordon moving the ball up to Harris who again
passed to Gunn who scored her second.
With the whistle approaching Birstall’s Courtney Preston took a superb corner
with the ball, at high level, kicked just over the net by Harris.
HALF-TIME Birstall United Vixens 2 – Ibstock Town 0
The second half started as the first had finished with Poppy Gordon taking
another shot at goal from a free kick.
Another corner was awarded to Birstall with Preston kicking the ball to Wortley.
This time the ball was kicked out.
Ibstock took the ball running with pace towards the Birstall end. EJ Gordon
moved out to tackle but was beaten and Ibstock scored.
Ibstock shouted ‘let’s get another’ but it was Birstall who would score three
minutes later, with Harris to Poppy Gordon passing again to Gunn who scored her
third.
Ibstock were not downbeat and again almost scored when the ball ricocheted
between umpteen players in front of the Birstall goal. Poppy Gordon managed to
free the ball and kick it safe.
Ibstock again made a run tackling as they did but again with no reward.
EJ Gordon took the goal kick with Poppy Gordon moving it on quickly to Gunn who
ran from the centre line, followed by three Ibstock players and lifted the ball
high up into the top corner of the net for her fourth.
Birstall could now ‘play ‘with the ball showing the skills that led them to be
the previous season’s runners up. Just two minutes later and from an Ibstock
free kick, which was intercepted by Wortley, Gunn made another long run to score
her fifth goal.
Birstall were being the dominant side with Hale passing the ball back to Harris
who again went unrewarded as her kick went high over the crossbar.
The game was now reaching its’ conclusion but the score line was not yet
complete.
Just minutes to go and Gunn would again add to her tally when her shot was
deflected off an Ibstock defender into the net.
Bolingbroke was brought back on for Wortley but the damage had been done to
Ibstock as the final whistle blew shortly afterwards.
